Is there anything that can help me with my fear of the dentist?
Yes. Some people are so frightened of the dentist that they will not go for dental treatment. They can overcome their fears with relaxation or sedation. Our team is sympathetic about these feelings, and you can ask our dentist about these ways to help.
What is Sedation?
Sedation Dentistry, sometimes called Relaxation Dentistry, refers to the way dentists manage Pain and Anxiety during dental appointments.
What is Oral Sedation:
Oral sedation is prescribed for relieving anxiety in the hours immediately before a dental appointment. Not only do these medications have a sedative effect they also have some degree of amnesic effect for most people. Patients remember little or nothing about their dental appointment.
Advantages to Dental Oral Sedation:
- Easy to administer: Swallow a small pill or liquid
- It is safe and easy to monitor
- Works well for most people
- Low Cost
What is Intravenous or IV Sedation?
In intravenous sedation or IV sedation, medications are administered through an injection to make people feel like they are asleep. The great advantage of IV sedation is that the effects are instantaneous. IV sedation is administered by an anaesthetist. IV sedation does not actually induce sleep; instead, you actually remain conscious and can follow instructions from your dentist. However, the feelings of relaxation will be intense enough for you not to remember much about what happened under treatment. The drugs used for IV sedation are more effective than the drugs taken orally.
The effects of sedative medicine take some time to wear off and your dentist will tell you how long the drugs will take to clear from your body. You won’t be able to drink alcohol, drive or work machinery during this time.
